PP3 - UNG - University of Nova Gorica - Laboratory of Environmental Research

Microfluidic and flow injection bioassays, laser spectroscopy, photothermal techniques for biomedical diagnostics and food safety control.


UNG was  in 1996 and is a very young and small University. Currently UNG offers a broad range of academic programs - seven undergraduate programs, five second level programs (Master’s), and seven third level programs (Doctoral). UNG has got 144 employees of whom 91 are Doctors of Science (80 of them are University professors), and 17 are young researchers (Ph.D. students). Over 32% of them are foreign scientists. The research activities are carried out in five different research laboratories.


Analytics: Gass chromatography (GC) with FID and μ-ECD detector, GC with mass spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography with FLD and DAD detector, Ionic chromatography, atomic absorption spectroscopy with flame atomization, atomic absorption spectroscopy with electrothermal atomization, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, IR spectrophotometer, thermal lens detection systems based on laser irradiation (thermal lens microscope, laser flash photolysis…), total carbon and nitrogen analyzer for liquid or solid samples, luminometer for toxicity determination… 


 The research activity at UNG is carried out in five research laboratories (Laboratory for Astroparticle Physics, Laboratory for Multiphase Processes, Laboratory of Organic Matter Physics, Materials research laboratory and Laboratory for Environmental Research), three research centers (Centre for Atmospheric Research, Centre for Systems and Information Technologies, Wine Research Centre) and one Research Institute (Institute for Cultural Studies). The Laboratory for Environmental Research, which takes part in TRANS2CARE project, counts on 15 member, among them a Senior Scientist, 3 PostDocs, some Phd Students. . It is composed of five research groups focusing on: the investigation of photochemical and microbial degradation as well as the transport of pollutants in the environment; the development of laser-based methods, bioanalytical methods, and ecotoxicological tests for the identification and determination of toxic compounds and their effects on the environment; the development of new materials for their application in environmentally friendly technologies; and the investigation in molecular biology and neurobiology.
The Lab is able to carry on different kinds of analyses among them the carry on Thermaless Spectroscopy. The technique permits the measurement of bioactive compounds. The measurement of bio-samples analysis is not spread in the world. It can measures a wide range of compounds from heavy metals to Cromo that is not measured with any other technique. The advantage is that this technique is high through put and cheap.



The Lab has good links to other institutions such as University of Trieste and University of Denmark with going on collaborations in the field of environmental topic, analytical experiments on degraded compounds as on toxic pollution for example.



 The University of Nova Gorica is half a research institute and half an educational provider that’s looking for grants.
