Healthy Aging – interdisciplinary approach to study human aging

"Healthy Aging - interdisciplinary approach to study human aging" by Prof. Dr. Lene Juel Rasmussen (Center for Healthy Aging, University of Copenhagen). 15th May 2013 at 7 p.m. at Lanthieri Mansion, Glavni trg 8, 5271 Vipava - SLOVENIA Aging is an integral part of human life. It affects all facets of living, including physical, mental, and social aspects. Our lifestyle, our health, and our longevity are directly or indirectly linked to aging. Aging is complex and relatively poorly understood. Obviously, we must expand our understanding of the cell and molecular biology and various biological pathways underlying aging. Social factors and life style play important roles in aging and individual lifespan and these complex interactions within populations must be also elucidated. Recent research suggests that endogenous and exogenous stress throughout life affects the aging process. One central question to be asked is: to what extent does the specific genetic makeup of a human being contribute to healthy aging and long life, and how do social class, life style, education etc. impact this process? An important contribution of Center for Healthy Aging (CEHA) has been to address this question. To achieve this goal, CEHA adopted an integrated multidisciplinary approach, combining basic biology and clinical research with population studies.

Study examined the uptake of physiological concentrations of cyanidin 3-glucoside, a widespread dietary flavonoid, into human vascular endothelial cells. Authors show that dietary flavonoids, despite their limited oral bioavailability and very low post-absorption plasma concentrations, may provide protection against oxidative stress-based cardiovascular diseases. Bilitranslocase, by mediating the cellular uptake of some flavonoids, is thus a key factor in their protective activity on endothelial function.

Dr. Ingrid Milošev (PP11) received Zois Award for important scientific achievements

Dr. Ingrid Milošev is a senior research scientist at the Institute Jozef Stefan Institute and assistant director for scientific research and teaching in Valdoltra Orthopaedic Hospital. Her research was on the electrochemical methods of investigating corrosion processes in alloys, especially those based on copper. The findings are published in prestigious scientific journals in the field of electrochemistry, and she is one of the leading researchers in the field. She contributed a lot to the knowledge on the biocompatibility and mechanical resistance of orthopedic materials. In addition, she explained mechanisms of the passive layer formation in simulated physiological solution for various biomedical alloys. She was among the first in the world exploring mechanisms of loosening the prosthesis and the response of the organism to implants. Her work in the hospital resulted in establishing a register of patients with prosthesis, which is important for doctors and for the benefit of patients. Eminent scientific achievements of Dr. Ingrid Milošev are an important contribution to the treasury of Slovenian science knowledge in electrochemistry. Her inventions awakened the functioning of the Valdoltra Orthopaedic Hospital, and raised the visibility of scientific achievements in international medical circles in the field of orthopedics and neurobiology.
